There are things to do with your passport before you travel.
Bar code on your passport:
- Must have a reader to know it, so…if someone steals your phone, they will only see a bar code.
- Have paper copies
- If you take a pic of your passport info, you can hide the image in notes after taking that pic so that
I would take a photo of my credit card with its phone number and have that in a hidden part as well.
If a criminal has high tech radio frequency identification reader (RFID), she or he can only steal your passport information if the book is open and if it is within 6 inches.

If he or she can steals your passport.
Here are 6 quick travel tips to protect your passport:
- Hidden money belt – not worn in TSA line and not reach for in public
- For over 20 years we have kept our passports in the hotel room safe and never had anything stolen.
- One tip is that your credit cards have more personal information on them than a passport so use an RFID blocking wallet or just a sleeve or two deep within your bag.
- Another tip is to divide those cards. One in your sock’s hidden pocket and one in your wallet.
- HUGE tip is do not use the card slots because you have to take your eyes off of your surroundings for too long to find the perfect slot.
- Tip to protect your passport is to, if carrying it through a high tourist pickpocket area, have it in an inner zipped pocket of your slash-resistant crossbody bag. Mine and 2 others have wire mesh panels.
- This is why it helps:
- Slows down a thief from stealing your passport. They are trained to be swift at picking your pockets. If it takes them too long, they will move on and skip you!
- So we have done our best by hiding it deep within, not reaching for it and slowing them down with wire mesh or a wire in the strap.
- This is why it helps:
- Many of our travel community are worried about their passport getting stolen midflight or in the airport.
- Here is what you do in the TSA line:
- Show your passport to the airport security officer.
- Stow it inside your personal item bag and within a zipped pocket.
- Or make sure it is in that pocket before you board the airplane.
- Here is what you do in the TSA line:
- If you are really worried, just have zipper clips or locking zipper clips.
- My tip: practice the locking ones. Not the easiest if you have large fingers.
- I think the clips are super effective.
- Important tip to do before you fly to a foreign country:
- Find the United States embassy for that country.
- If lost, usembassy.gov to find the website.
- Phone number
- Address
- Website
All of these tips will help give you peace of mind when traveling through a crowded tourist area with a passport.
