Tutorial on How to Get Beach Wave Curls

This tutorial is on how to create loose beach wave curls with short to medium style even long hair.  My LauriePOP YouTube Channel above will give you exact details and is easier to follow in my opinion.  I create YouTube videos on travel ideas that POP into my head, makeup ideas that POP into my head and DIY tutorials.  POP over and check it out.

You can have natural looking waves in your hair if you follow these six steps.

Step #1

When your hair is in the ocean salt water, your hair feels a little stiff as it dries.  For natural beach waves, then, put Mousse on damp hair, not soaking wet.  When hair is soaking wet, it’s too heavy to hold the mousse.  So dry it just a tad or go get dressed, or keep your hair in a towel before starting the beach waves process.

Step #2

Do NOT comb your hair once you put the mousse on.  You can style your hair before applying the mousse, but you will have extra hold and stiffness if you let it be.

Dry it.  Air dry.  Dry it.

Step #3 For beach wave curls, Leave 1-2 inches out of the curling wand before rolling under.

Step #4 Hold your curling iron horizontal against your head.  Resist the urge to hold it vertically for loose curls.  Since the back of my hair is short, I just roll it in rolls to give it some shape.

The short layers at the top of my head are so short that I don’t go alllllll the way under.  They have plenty of volume and would be too tight of a curl.  Farther down here, where my hair is thicker and longer, I will roll my hair all the way under to my scalp.

Step #5 When you get to four seconds, open your curling iron just a bit and pull the rest of the hair forward.  If you have long hair, this is where you will pull the hair vertically down.  We are telling the hair where we want it to stay for the day.  Not tight curls, but loose locks that have a natural wave to them, as if we were at the beach that morning.

For this difficult part of my hair, I have to curl a chunk of it backwards so that my hair doesn’t turn into one big kahuna wave facing forward.  When I asked my first hair dresser how to get loose locks, she said to do alternating curls front and facing back.  And with practice I have to curl just one or two pieces backward and this is how.  I roll it up to my scalp and after four seconds I pull back, vertical and downward.

Step #6 in this beach wave hair tutorial is to not brush it once it’s curled.  Let your hair memorize how it’s supposed to look.  When you’ve finished putting on your makeup or making breakfast, finger your curls out a bit by picking it up a bit.  Run your fingers up your scalp and just pull out a bit.  Do not go all the way to the end of each curl.

A problem that might happen to you is that you left the curling iron in your hair too long and the curl is way too tight for that area.  If you want loose wavey curls, pull down (with your fingers) the end of that curl and hold it for 2 seconds.

Curling Iron – Wand.  Use the correct size for your hair type.  In order to create loose locks, I need tighter curls if that makes sense.  I cannot use a flat iron for this look.  Curls are not beachy looking.  They are too loose with no shape.  A curling iron with this type of barrel is great for my fine hair.  And by fine I mean limp.  It curls my hair so that as it falls throughout the day, the hair is wavey and not immediately straight.

The Easiest “Party Nail” for This Summer

//rcm-na.amazon-adsystem.com/e/cm?o=1&p=13&l=ez&f=ifr&linkID=5299ce778e423adbbc8a9b688434f304&t=la0456-20&tracking_id=la0456-20

This summer I’m guiding you to the easiest and smartest ways to create your own nail art for a beach trip. It’s your “party nail” – that’s when one fingernail design is having its own party.  The nine other nails have a solid nail polish color – the wall flowers of your party.  Which is  your nearest ocean: the Atlantic, off of California, in the Bahamas, the US Virgin Islands?  Let’s make nail art for the summer.

Nice to meet you!  POP over to my YouTube Channel to see more detailed pics and demonstrations!

3 Things POP into my head when painting a “party nail” on my fingernails for a beach trip.

1. What colors match my bathing suit?

Some of you may not care if the nails match completely.  I just want them to blend.

2. What glitter do I have?

The color of your solids determines which color glitter you will want.

3. Do I want the party nail to blend with the other nails or really POP with its own party?  Muted or Pizzazz?

Wedding ring was off because I was on the way to sinus surgery.

My nail art is flamingo inspired for the beach this summer.  I loved the pinks and gold in my Recollection stickers so I ended up going with a fuchsia pink beside the gold.

I debated whether or not to use my favorite pink: A-rose at Dawn, Broke by Noon.  In the end, it had too much silver that does not go with gold.

Then I started thinking, wait, flamingos are salmon colored-not fuchsia.  So you can try that orangey tone next to the gold.  I don’t like it as much as I like the Kiss Me On My Tulips by OPI.  Then I put glitter on top of the orange color, and it can give you a much more muted but fun beachy look.

I wanted my party nail to really stand out, and the best way to do that is by using the lightest color in the gold glitter.

Look closely; see the white in that gold?  So my base color should be the lightest color that is in the glitter….

The best ever white fingernail polish is Sally Hansen’s Hard as Nails Xtreme Wear White On.  Here is a sample of a cheapy cheap white by Sinful Colors-that’s what was cheapest in my grocery store that day.  They’re mostly milky.  OPI has a better one, Alpine Snow, but it still not the best.

This stuff is like white out.  Raise your hand if you ever painted your nails with white out in school in the 80s….

Glitter Nail Polish

When you’re picking out glitter, make sure it is condensed looking.  You do not want the ones that have big pieces of glitter or sequin type pieces (below).  It’s super extra sticky, which makes it hard to get off.  Plus, it has minimal impact.  You hardly see the party.  No one will want to attend that party. glitter-nail-art-summer

See how the gold and purple glitter are like a powder?  That will give you more impact.  More bang for your effort.

When using a blue toned glitter, the base color can be a lighter purple, a pink or a light pink.  So I’m going to try all three and show you the different party offerings.

So then I tried white because I do see white in this glitter.  Look how it is turning out on the video above.  It makes me not like this glitter as much.  It looks goopy and not very condensed.  BUT what if we painted our other nails a I’m Not Really a Waitress (red), and this white one with silver, red and blue glitter POPped?  Looks like a patriotic party, right?  That’s next week’s nail art for sure!  Happy Summer Beach Trippin, friends!

Top Things to Take on Your Cruise

Your cruise to the Caribbean, to the Bahamas out of Miami, or a Mediterranean Cruise is going to be so much fun.  Here are the top things to take.  You don’t want to forget these top things on your cruise.  If your ship stops at a beach location like the Caribbean, I suggest bringing a small soft cooler.  You can save money by taking your own water bottles and snacks.  And it keeps them cool!

A drawstring cinch sack bag will come in handy because you can store an iPad, snacks, book, keys and passports, etc.  You could even get them monogrammed and have one for each family member.  CUTE!

dont-forget-to-take-magnet-caribbean-cruise Take magnets to decorate your cabin door.  You can even take this magnetized lightweight dry erase board.  Kids and you will recognize it from far away.  And you can write notes to your steward. magnets-top-things-to-take-cruise

I packed my Cleanser and Vaseline in these containers to save space in my carryon suitcase liquids bag.  They hold alot.  I love love love writing the contents on cute washi tape from my planner onto these.  In the video, you’ll see how little of my cleanser I actually used.  Do you wear alot of makeup while on vacation?  I want to, but I always end up not.  I packed vaseline in case your legs get chapped at a beach stop.

Go-toob to the rescue.  I was in Europe for 10 days, and this is how much I had left in the shampoo bottle.  They’re tiny but huge! top-things-cruise-shampoo

This waterproof phone case with a lanyard is so awesome!  cruise-water-proof-case-phoneBut we found that we didn’t use it all the time.  If you will be at the beach, I can highly recommend this.  It’s an Amazon Top Buy product.  Solid, and you can use your fingers through the plastic case.  I also think just a key card lanyard would be awesome especially for kids who are on the unlimited soda package and for getting on and off the ship.

If you will have time to enjoy coffee on the deck or a cool drink, we wish we would’ve taken our aluminum mugs.  The ship’s coffee mugs are tiny!  Plus you can dump the fruity drinks in there to stay cool as well.

Since we needed to carry passports, I suggest taking a Buddy Pouch that is the strongest velcro carrier I’ve ever seen.  It’s magnetized and does not budge from your shorts waist band.  We also used this Pink Portable Charger for our cell phones.  You can stick it through the hole to charge your phone while you’re on a train or bus or tendering.  Do you see the little zipper?

Totally fun thing to not forget is these clips to hold your towel down on deck.  Super windy!  They just make me smile!  They come in all kinds of beach styles.

take-cruise-top-outletsThe #1 top thing to bring on a cruise ship is a rotating power strip.  Cruise ships only have two American ones in your whole room!  I love mine!

And my all-time favorite book to read at a beach location is The Devil in the Junior League.  It is about exactly what it sounds like.  Cute but really good!cruise-pool-top-things-to-take-bahamas-
