I enjoy wearing makeup while on vacation. If you are a women over 40 you may be packing makeup and skincare in the wrong way. Use my tips and tricks that are specifically for traveling with ALL the makeup and skincare items our mature skin MIGHT NEED for that trip.
You will benefit from these tips.
3 tips before you pack makeup:
- Wear sunglasses
- You’ll never see those tourists again
- Makeup is just an expression of our personality
Packing Tip #1: Pyramid System
Put a long palette on the bottom, smaller items fit across that rectangle, then keep going up into the shape of a pyramid.
I have also have just slid my palette between the luggage handles while packing clothes on top.

One travel hack I am still building is my travel palette.
I have my colors down, so I have different eyeshadows, but need to crack these colors out so that I can magnetize them to this build your own palette.
Why is that a strategy?
I only pack one palette – not need for pyramid.
But then I need bronzer too which is in its own container. If you like a cream bronzer, tell me yours.

Packing Tip #2: Eyeshadow Choices
- Pack all neutrals with one accent color
- Pack a palette with just colors for travel or add the accent colors needed to match the color scheme of your travel wardrobe.
Packing Tip #3: Space Saver for Brushes
Pack less or pack fewer brushes. This is one way to pack less makeup:
Multitasking Makeup Tools:
- Foundation or tinted moisturizer with sunscreen (sunscreen hacks at the end)
- Makeup brush: I can use 1 powder brush for powder, bronzer and even blush.
- Eyeshadow brush to smudge eyeliner or give me an accent color.
- Concealer brush-I use it for all over eyeshadow brush before and for foundation into the inner eye.
- Fingers – use bright color white along my lash line where there are few wrinkles still.
OR for a deep accent color OR if a bold color, I will blend a tad with my fingertip before blending with a makeup brush.

In dry climates, this is the travel hack. I use moisturizer and tinted moisturizer.
Packing Tip #4: Pack Neutrals Only
Easiest way to pack less is this: Do not pack skincare items.
- Face versus skin
- Can you leave one skincare tube at home if need liquid space?
- Can you leave the bronzer at home? Now you do not need the brush or the container now!
Other Considerations:
Type of Cases: stand, travel, roll up in towel, BK Beauty
Mascara primer helps stay on but comes off so much more easily at night!
3 ways you can remove makeup on vacation:
- Remover wipes
- cleanser
- cotton balls soaked in makeup remover
Two Challenges to Try:
- Make list of the least amount of skincare you can use if you had to.
- Make list of least amount of color. (I’ve used toilet paper folded over for blush-was not the best.)
Do you wear makeup for a long flight?
Long Flight Tips for Makeup:
- Prevent jet lag with Trish McElvoy’s, makeup director for Texas, motion.
- Wear moisturizer and right after application press the flat side of your fingertip against your cheekbones and swipe toward your temples then down and backwards below your ears.
- Travel hack: puffy eyes after long flight
- Patches may help you but not necessary
- Non-negotiable: make your list. Then leave 1 item at home.
- Eyeshadow primer: helps if sweating.
- Eyeshadow primer evens skin tone! Cc cream or light layer of foundation does too.
Packing Tip #5: List out your trip activities
You may find you do not want to wear makeup everyday!
Dry Skin Tips
- Vitamin C serum
- Moisturizer plus cc cream for double moisture
- Vaseline or your favorite item at night
- Lip stuff from Colorado
