Here is a list of new rules for carry-on luggage of items in 2025 for several Asian airlines.
The United States Federal Aviation Administration has banned many items because they could be harmful to passengers or crew, but there are some new travel updates in 2025 you need to know about since the fire inside Air Busan.
Several Asian airlines have banned the use of power banks inside the cabin of their airplanes.
Backstory
Several passengers’ portable chargers caught on fire by combusting midflight. Air Busan was one of the first to make this new rule.
The new rule is that you cannot use them during a flight on many of those Asian airlines. My guess is that they used a cheap power bank that had a defect or that it overheated and caught fire while charging a phone. Notice that those are 2 different ways a power bank could be dangerous in the airplane.
What this means…
Some passengers got confused so here is the travel tip: In their airplanes you cannot use the power bank by plugging it into your phone, but you are allowed to pack it for your vacation.
My tip for overall safety when traveling is to use a low heat delivery power bank. Anker is a trusted brand. I now have this power bank that has a low temperature when delivering the power to my phone.
So when plugged in, it will not get hotter than 38 degrees C which is 100 degrees Fahrenheit.
The FAA says that 0-100 watt hours is the limit for lithium-ion batteries for us, and my power bank is 30 wH.
The second new rule for power banks during a flight is from just a few Asian airlines, including Air Busan. Passengers are banned from storing their power bank in the overhead bins. These batteries that charge your phone are combustible. For me, it is when it is plugged into my phone that it can start getting hot.
If it does overheat so much, it can catch on fire.
That process that a portable charger goes through from existing to catching on fire is called a thermal runway. And no one wants that in an airplane.
But the update is because lithium-ion batteries can combust even if not delivering power to a phone.
Several years ago, the Away suitcase was the first one to provide a battery embedded into the luggage. But because the bins fill up fast with carry-on luggage and coats and hats and cpap machines and diaper bags airlines have to check bags last minute. The TSA added to their rules that lithium-ion batteries in power bank portable chargers are not allowed in checked luggage.
That’s when passengers panicked having to use a screwdriver to remove that lithium-ion battery. Now all is well.
Dry batteries like AA or triple A batteries are allowed in both checked bags and in carry-on luggage.
But the rule from the FAA states that power banks or lithium-ion batteries more potent than 100 watt hours are not allowed in the cargo hold during a flight.
My job is to give you some tips you can travel with.
One tip is that you do not need the 20000 maH power bank.
- It is very heavy
- You only need a full charge worth of juice in your power bank.
What can you do in 2025 if not flying in an Asian airline that has these new rules?
Be observant of your portable charger.
If it is expanding or smoking or burning or getting way too hot to the touch, unplug it. If in the airplane, tell the flight crew.
Here are some other things that are completely banned in luggage:
- Alcohol that is over 140 proof is not allowed in checked luggage or in carry-on bags.
- The number one reason is because it can combust mid-flight.
- F/a have tools and fire retardant equipment if that item is in the cabin of the airplane. But what if an item catches on fire in the cargo hold while the airplane is in air? Your safety is the FAA’s focus so they make some items completely banned for flights.
- Bear spray is not allowed in either carry on or checked bags. Either its potency or that it could be used as a weapon against flight crew is probably why.
- Chlorine for pools or spas are banned from checked bags and carryon luggage.
